THE LAST TUESDAY SOCIETY

The Last Tuesday Society was an alternative, vaudeville style performance platform that allowed emerging and established artists to take artistic risks and develop their individual and collective creative practice.

The Last Tuesday Society represented a devoted community of artists who were committed to pushing artistic boundaries, questioning the nature of theatre and art and bringing a much needed rush of fresh energy and exuberance back into Melbourne’s performance environment.

Since its inception, The Last Tuesday Society has been dedicated to supporting and developing individual and collective arts practice, presenting new short works from such diverse artists as The Suitcase Royale, post, Mish Grigor and Zoe Coombs Marr, The Black Lung Theatre and Whaling Firm, Declan Greene, Ash Flanders and The Sisters Grimm, Little Ones Theatre, The List Operators, Claudia O’Doherty, Nick Coyle, Elbow Room, Grit Theatre, Emma Beech, Poet Laureate Telia Nevile and visual artists The Safari Team, Amy Spiers and Tai Snaith, among many, many more. We have also presented international acts such as Red Bastard, New York performance artist Julie Atlas Muz and UK comedians David O’Doherty and Josie Long.

Hosted, curated and produced by Richard Higgins and Bron Batten, The Last Tuesday Society has been presented at festivals nationally and internationally including The Edinburgh Fringe, On Edge Festival in Cairns, This is Not Art Festival in Newcastle, The Village as part of The Falls Music Festival in Lorne.

We have commandeered  inner city venues such as The Old Bar, Yah Yah’s, The Grace Darling, The Northcote Social Club and The Order of Melbourne. The Last Tuesday has also hosted festival clubs, including Tuesday nights at the HiFi Bar and Ballroom for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and The Melbourne Fringe Festival at The North Melbourne Town Hall.

We produced The YouTube Comment Orchestra as part of the Helium Performance Series at the Malthouse Theatre in September 2014 to rave reviews and sold out shows.

The Last Tuesday premiered our project Pimp My Play in 2011, presenting classic theatrical texts by dividing them up scene by scene, giving each scene to a different artist or company to do with what they will and then re-presenting the play in order as a dramatic exquisite corpse.

We pimped Nick Enright’s Blackrock, Tenessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire and a unique interpretation of David Williamson’s Don’s Party at The Malthouse Theatre in July 2013.

In July 2015 we pimped Romeo and Juliet’ as the closing event of the 2015 NEON season of independent theatre at the Melbourne Theatre Company.
